Yellowstone single story
Due for release on Wednesday July 13th - “Yellowstone” sprung out of the depths of inspiration triggered by a documentary I watched by David Attenborough released in 2009. A young Ernest, aged 19, was struck by the natural phenomena in Yellowstone National Park. I was struck by the “diamond dust”, tiny ice crystals floating through the air, making a glowing ice fog along with spectacular “sun dogs” which are 360 degree rainbows adorning the snowy landscapes, the amazing geysers and animal life.
It seemed like Nature had made the most beautiful things the human eye can imagine... I was transported there, it was my first spiritual experience. I put pen to paper that night, the magnitude of spirited-energy spewing forth lyrics onto the page “Cliffs are cut and boulders grow” “Images sent from up above” are indications of the sheer awe which struck me like lightning.
It’s the 2nd single release from the yet to be released SPIRAL BOUND, my debut album.
My father, Steve Romig, wrote the third verse and recorded the melody an octave lower on the track to add a sense of wisdom and depth. Originally I hadn’t planned on releasing the song myself, I imagined an older more grizzled individual, like Johnny Cash, or my Dad…
I have an iconic video with scenes from Yellowstone National Park to accompany the song and that will be available for viewing on Youtube and my website
Recording Yellowstone was a marathon over two years. I started off in a studio at home in the lockdown of 2020 and then layers were added progressively, grabbing studio time in betweeen lockdowns, delays, cancellations, moving 7 times. session musicians doing brilliant takes that I regretfully didn't use in the end as I was searching for a very particular sound....
